TAPROOM & EVENT SPACE

We love our taproom! Although we do not rent out the entire taproom for events, the north end of our taproom can be rented and comfortably accommodates 50-100 people for a standing setting or for 40 people seated. Please use the contact page to inquire about booking the space in our taproom!

EVENT SPACE

The American Can Building dates back to 1889. Beginning in 1902, it was a canning factory that churned out billions of tin cans for Hormel foods, Swift & Co., Armour & Co. for well-known brands like Spam, Green Giant vegetables, Swift meats, Fischer nuts, Hershey’s chocolate, and Rayette hairspray.

In the late 20th century, the food packaging industry found new ways to package food. This downward spiral in canning caused the last owner of the building, the Silgan Container Company, to shutter its St. Paul operations in 2007.

St. Paul city officials considered demolishing the vacant industrial structure. But in 2013, a California development company that repurposes old industrial buildings bought the former canning factory. The company, Orten, invested millions in renovating the building before seeking new tenants.

HISTORY OF THE BUILDING

ENTER BLACKSTACK BREWING

When the Johnson family first saw the dilapidated historic building, they knew this would be BlackStack’s home. After countless hours of retrofitting and bringing the 20,000-square-foot space to code, they turned it into an open, inviting taproom.

We want visitors of all ages to feel like they’re in an industrial cathedral-meets-modern museum with abundant natural light and comfy lounge seating.

Besides enjoying our exceptional beer, people come here to play one of our hundreds of board games, participate in trivia night, watch a sporting event on our huge screen, or hang in a welcoming space with a chill vibe.

Mindful of the pitfalls of big taprooms, we’ve installed noise-absorbing insulation along the high ceilings to minimize the echo chamber effect.

You can find us in Saint Paul’s Midway-Hamline neighborhood, right next door to Can-Can Wonderland, a mini-golf destination. Just look for the big smokestack! If you can’t get to our taproom, you can find our beer in Minnesota’s finest restaurants and liquor stores.
